Scentbird Achieves A Major Sustainability Win With Circular Mailers

Transitioning to a recycled mailer is a perfect example of the positive environmental impact that subscription-based companies can have just by including recycled and reclaimed materials in their packaging.

Marrying Aesthetic, Sustainability, and Supply Chain Resiliency

Scentbird is on a mission to empower each and every person to express themselves through scent. They revolutionize the way individuals perfume by bringing the ultimate fragrance playground right to their fingertips through their curated selection. Through their monthly subscription service, members can choose from over 500+ designer colognes and perfumes each month.

Historically, Scentbird shipped their perfumes in black matte bubble mailers, manufactured overseas, that featured a nylon additive that created a unique and enhanced texturized aesthetic, but rendered the mailers unrecyclable in thin-film bins.

EcoEnclose worked with Scentbird to transition their business to more eco-conscious bubble mailers that are manufactured in the USA, contain 50% recycled content (10% PCW), are beautifully printed (with a more subtle gray design), and can be recycled in #2/#4 thin-film bins, or sent back to EcoEnclose as part of our take-back program.

Scentbird’s packaging decisions were driven by their desire to balance their need for supply chain resiliency, their desire to increase their packaging sustainability, and the importance of making sure these changes were financially feasible. After transitioning their main monthly mailers to a more circular alternative, they applied the same sustainability principles to other aspects of their packaging suite, including stickers, tissue paper, and packaging tape.

Environmental Savings

In one year, Scentbird’s 4.5 million recycled bubble mailers will save an enormous amount of resources:

364 gallons of oil, enough to produce 7,100 gallons of gasoline

158,367 lbs of carbon emissions

281 tons of plastic kept from the landfill

3,969 mBTUs of electricity, enough to power the average US household for four years

112,500 lbs of post-consumer recycled plastic, recovered from blue-bins and given a second life
