Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I consider pouches?

Pouches are becoming more popular as a packaging solution because they:

  • Are Lightweight and Convenient: They use less material than rigid packaging, are easier to transport, and reduce shipping costs.
  • Cost-Effective: They are often more affordable than rigid packaging options.
  • Have Shelf Appeal: Their upright design gives products a strong, eye-catching presence in stores and online.
  • Provide Consumer Convenience: Easy to open, reseal, and store at home, offering customers a better user experience.
  • Are Versatile Across Products: Perfect for snacks, coffee, pet food, powders, liquids, and more — with options like resealable zippers or spouts.
  • Support E-commerce Growth: The expanding e-commerce sector is driving demand for packaging that is suitable for online retail.

Why PCR pouches?

We decided to prioritize pouches made with PCR (post-consumer recycled content) because most consumers put pouches in landfills. Most pouches are made with virgin materials, so it's powerful to collectively create demand for post-consumer recycled content in pouch films to make recycled content in pouches more mainstream over time.

While pouches can be designed to be thin-film recyclable, facilities are unlikely to recycle them successfully. If a thin-film recyclable pouch ends up in the recycling stream, it is challenging for material recovery facilities to determine if it can be recycled because it looks, feels, and acts the same as pouches that cannot be recycled. If they are metalized or not thin-film recyclable, they can shut down the entire line, which is a very costly issue for the facility.

While we wait for recycling systems to catch up, EcoEnclose believes in doing the best we can right now. That means using the highest possible percentage of PCR content to significantly reduce each pouch’s carbon footprint. Even if it doesn’t solve end-of-life challenges today, it’s a vital step toward a circular future.

Are PCR pouches food-safe?

Yes - PCR films are safe for food contact.

Are EcoEnclose pouches recyclable?

EcoEnclose PCR MET PET pouches and PCR EVOH PE Pouches are not thin-film recyclable. They are multi-layered pouches designed for the landfill. However, you can look for specialty recycling programs, such as Ridwell, that accept multi-layer film for recycling.

If you prefer or require a thin-film recyclable pouch, contact us for a custom quote. It is important to note that even when pouches are made of mono-materials and designed to be thin-film recyclable, most pouches end up in the landfill.

What is the shelf life of EcoEnclose pouches?

Shelf life depends on the product being packaged. We recommend doing accelerated shelf life testing if you are not sure of the barrier specs required.
