Frequently Asked Questions
About Designing Eco Friendly Stickers

What is the material makeup of your stickers?*

Understanding what materials are in your stickers.

Stickers are made up of 5 parts. From top to bottom:
  • Top Layer - Any kind of protective coating. We offer a matte plastic-free varnish and a gloss or matte plastic film.
  • Ink - Our stickers are printed with toner ink.
  • Facestock - We offer paper and plastic stickers. These are available in 100% recycled, 100% post-consumer waste paper in white and Kraft, 90% recycled clear plastic, and virgin white BOPP plastic.
  • Adhesive - We use a recycle-compatible adhesive for all of our stickers.
  • Liner - Our Zero Waste liner is made of 100% post-consumer waste paper; our standard liner is made of virgin paper or recycled plastic.

The recycled content percentages listed above refer to the paper fibers only, or the plastic material only. Learn more.

Why do you offer two release liners?

Stickers for every budget.

Our Zero Waste Stickers have a unique zero-waste release liner made of 100% recycled materials and is curbside recyclable with paper products. Our Standard Stickers have a traditional silicone-coated release liner made with virgin paper or a 90% post-consumer waste polyester film; these Standard liners are not curbside recyclable. We carry both lines to ensure companies of all sizes have eco friendly options available to them.

How should I dispose of the release liners?

Responsible dispose of your sticker release liners.

Our Zero Waste stickers are delivered on a release liner that is made of 100% recycled paper. This liner is unique because it is curbside recyclable with paper products. Toss these liners directly into your curbside paper recycling bin for responsible recycling.

Our Standard stickers are delivered on a traditional silicone-coated release liner made with virgin paper. We offer a Sticker Liner Take-Back Program to help keep these liners out of the landfill. Learn more here.

Our Clear stickers are delivered on a release liner made with 90% post-consumer waste polyester film. These liners are not recyclable and should be disposed of in your waste bin.

What are your artwork specifications and requirements?

Can I use multiple designs for a single sticker size?

Printing multiple designs within one order.

You can use multiple designs towards a single order quantity as long as the designs are for the same sticker shape, size, and facestock. There are applicable art change fees which allow you to have higher volume pricing.

Please contact us to place your order. If you instead place your order on this page, we will email you to collect payment for the art change fee required for printing multiple designs.

How long will it take to receive my stickers?

Process timeline of ordering stickers.

You will receive a final preproduction proof of your sticker within 2 days after your order is placed. Once your proof is approved, your lead time and sticker printing will begin. Check out our current lead times here.

Are your stickers recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable?

The end-of-life of eco friendly stickers.

We encourage recycling when possible because recycling (vs composting) enables the materials to live on in the recycle stream. Our stickers are designed for recyclability, but not in isolation. We encourage selecting a facestock to support the recyclability of the substrate.

It is important to keep the entire sticker in mind when thinking about the sticker's end of life. The facestock of our paper Zero Waste stickers is made of 100% recycled paper, so the facestock itself is naturally biodegradable and compostable. Our stickers have a recycle-compatible adhesive which makes them recycle-friendly. However, this adhesive means our stickers as a whole are not certified compostable or 100% biodegradable.

For example, placing one of our Zero Waste uncoated paper stickers on a cardboard box means the entire sticker and the cardboard box are both recycled in the cardboard recycling stream (since the sticker is left stuck to the box). We do not recommend removing the sticker prior to recycling the box in this scenario. However, if the same sticker was placed on a plastic bottle, the sticker is then considered a contaminant to the plastic recycling stream, so we would then advise removing the sticker from the plastic bottle before recycling the bottle.

We do not advise stickers to be recycled on their own because the adhesive can cause them to get caught in recycling machinery.

Do you offer blank sticker sheets?

Printing stickers at home.

We offer blank 8.5x11" sticker sheets in our Zero Waste line. These sheets are an uncoated facestock and are available with or without pre-cut stickers. The minimum order quantity is 500 sheets. Contact us for more details.

Do you offer sticker samples?

Ordering custom samples.

We offer custom sticker design samples, learn more here. These are great options for customers wanting to get an idea of print quality and colors prior to submitting a full order of custom stickers.

As part of the proofing process after your order is placed, we share a digital proof that is designed to show the design layout, text accuracy, image proportion, and artwork placement on the label. You will receive a final proof within 2 days after your order is placed.

We also offer complimentary samples so you can get a feel for print quality and materials. In addition to these stock design samples, we also offer samples that feature other brands - contact us for more details.

Can I use your stickers to seal my shipping boxes or mailers?

Explore our carton-sealing tape for shipping boxes.

We highly recommend you do not use our stickers as the main sealing method for our shipping boxes or mailers. This is to ensure these packages do not open unintentionally during transit. We recommend sealing your packages with one of our many tape options - shop carton-sealing tape here - and then placing the sticker on top of the tape for a secure seal.

Does your sticker adhesive contain plastic?

Recycle-compatible materials for clean recycling streams.

The adhesive used on our eco friendly stickers and labels is a recycle-compatible acrylic emulsion adhesive, which is acrylic suspended in water. There are several things to consider when asking if a sticker or label is plastic-free, so we developed this resource to help explain how plastics are defined and characterized across the industry.

Largely, we consider an acrylic emulsion-based paint or adhesive to contain plastic (as acrylic is a form of plastic, derived from petroleum). We know many in the industry consider acrylic emulsion adhesives to be “plastic-free” but we want to be more transparent about what the material contains.

Paper-based packaging, including stickers and labels, that use these adhesives can typically still be composted because it represents such a tiny percentage of the overall material. In our conversations with composters, adhesives in such small amounts do not currently compromise the yield of the compost they produce. If you choose to compost these materials, double-check with your composting service first - do they accept things like cardboard or corrugated boxes and envelopes? If so, they would accept packaging that uses polymer adhesives as its sealant.

As with all EcoEnclose products, the optimum end-of-life scenario is recycling, which is the basis for how we design our products. The acrylic emulsion adhesive is recycle-compatible, which we believe to be the more sustainable option over composting to perpetuate a circular economy and drive the market toward improved recycling infrastructure. You can read more about how we design our products by visiting our Sustainable Packaging Framework.

What is a release liner and why are recycled release liners important?

Recycled and recyclable release liners for eco friendly stickers.

A release liner is a material that carries a substrate with a pressure-sensitive adhesive until that adhesive is ready for its next step. It is sometimes called a backing or carrier. Many common items have release liners - adhesive bandages such as Band-Aids, feminine products, stamps, pressure-sensitive tape, heavy-duty mailers, labels, and stickers to name a few!

Traditionally, release liners are made out of a base substrate, such as supercalendered paper, glassine, or PET. This base substrate is then typically coated with a layer of silicone (or sometimes another type of release agent). This coating gives it release properties. The vast majority of release liners are made with 100% virgin materials and are either unrecyclable or are extremely difficult to recycle. A standard silicone-coated release liner must be sent to one of very few manufacturers in the US (like Fox River) that has the equipment needed to separate the silicone from the paper, so the paper can be recycled.

EcoEnclose’s Zero Waste Label Release Liner is made of 100% post-consumer waste and curbside recyclable with mixed paper. Through a unique, patent-pending process, the facestock of these labels and stickers is coated with adhesive before being laid onto the Zero Waste release liner (versus the standard process in which a silicone coated release liner is covered with acrylic adhesive and the facestock is applied to it).

The Zero Waste Label Release Liner is currently offered on Direct Thermal Shipping Labels, Laser Printer Sheet Labels, and Eco Friendly Stickers.

What stickers do you recommend for glass or aluminum applications?

Eco friendly stickers for every application.

When pairing a sticker facestock with a substrate, the optimum solution will be matching the end-of-life scenarios or making sure that the materials can be recycled the same way. Because our custom sticker offerings are limited to plastic and paper, any of them can be placed onto aluminum or glass, because they will all be screened out during the aluminum and glass recycling process anyway.

If you are packaging liquids, we recommend going with a stronger plastic facestock, such as the BOPP Zero Waste sticker, or the Clear Standard sticker. The BOPP Sticker is virgin material and comes on the Zero Waste liner, which is fully curbside recyclable. The Clear Sticker is 90% post-consumer waste that comes on the Standard liner, which is not curbside recyclable.
