Frequently Asked Questions

Why seaweed as a packaging input?

EcoEnclose has always proceeded cautiously when it comes to biobased alternatives to plastic. We declined to proceed with many commercially available solutions, such as PLA and cellulose. Read our guide - Seaweed as a Packaging Input - to learn more about seaweed, Sway, and why we're so invested in this particular emerging solution.

In summary, by replacing plastic windows in your retail packaging with Sway seaweed film, your brand can propel regenerative packaging innovations essential in building a more circular future.

Here's why we're so excited to bring Sway's seaweed film to our brands:

  • Seaweed's potential to be regenerative: When grown thoughtfully, seaweed can restore ocean health and sequester carbon while requiring minimal freshwater, chemicals, and arable land.
  • Enables our brands to build a future of materials circularity: EcoEnclose's vision is to work with you - our forward-thinking brand community - to accelerate market adoption of the most promising emerging materials.
  • Sway's commitment to scaling seaweed thoughtfully: Sway is committed to doing right by the planet first - working with vetted suppliers, verifying key claims with third parties, and partnering with ocean health-focused NGOs.

Can I recycle these retail boxes with the seaweed window?

Yes! This box is fully curbside recyclable! You can put it – as is – into your recycling bin, and the seaweed-based window will be screened out during the repulping process. As with all windows, staples, labels, and other common additions to paper packaging, non-paper components are screened out during the paper repulping process and landfilled.

The seaweed-based window is home-compostable, meaning it will break down into a healthy soil amendment. For consumers eager to divert landfill waste and who maintain a home compost system or have access to an industrial compost service that accepts compostable packaging, follow these 3 simple steps: (1) remove the window from the box, (2) throw the window in home or industrial compost, and then (3) curbside recycle the box.

What is the use case for these retail boxes?

These boxes are ideal for packaging small soft goods, household items such as mugs and candles, or foods such as candies, pasta, beans, granola, or nuts that require a minimal shelf life.

How should these retail boxes be stored?

We recommend storage in ambient temperatures and stable relative humidity between 30-80% RH for optimal performance. We do not recommend high-humidity environments. These boxes should also be kept away from water.

Can these retail boxes be refrigerated or placed in the freezer?

These recycled kraft board boxes are not recommended for a refrigerator or freezer. If that’s a potential storage area for your product, we highly recommend ordering a sample or bundle to test before proceeding with a larger order.

What is the shelf life for these retail boxes? What is your refund policy?

Over an extended period, the seaweed film may discolor, warp, or peel away from the box. Since this product uses very new film material, please note how the box holds up over time. If you open a case of these boxes after two months and see an issue, please contact us for a refund.

Are these retail boxes FDA-Compliant?

Case quantities of our gable top retail boxes with seaweed window are FDA-Compliant, meaning the product is compliant with FDA rules and regulations and is created with materials that are FDA-Approved.

Our bundle quantities are re-cased in a non-FDA compliant facility, so please order case quantities if you need food-safe product.
