Frequently Asked Questions

What are pouches?

Pouches can refer to various things depending on the context. In the context of packaging:

Pouches are increasingly used as packaging for various food and beverage products. They are made of flexible materials, such as plastic or aluminum foil, and often have a resealable spout or cap for easy consumption. Examples include pouches for baby food, juice, yogurt, and sauces.

Traditional stand up pouches are made with multi-layered, flexible film and are designed to serve as a more efficient and eye-catching alternative to rigid plastic, glass, and paperboard packaging. They are most commonly used for food packaging - like granola, pet food, and coffee - but are increasingly used for packaging nonfood items, including apparel and personal care items.

It's important to note that the term "pouches" can have different meanings depending on the industry or specific context in which it is used. Learn more about sustainable pouch packaging in our pouch guide.

What makes EcoEnclose paper pouches unique?

EcoEnclose is proud to offer one of North America's first curbside recyclable paper pouch solutions. Standard Kraft pouches on the market today contain plastic layers and linings that give barrier properties and heat sealability. In contrast, our unique paper pouch has a heat-sealable water-based coating that provides a barrier to grease, water, and moisture.

Our paper pouch solutions are:
  • Made with sustainably sourced virgin paper
  • 100% plastic-free
  • Curbside recyclable (TAPPI T275), naturally biodegradable and compostable*
  • FDA-Approved

*We do not recommend composting as the optimal end of life unless the product is likely to contain heavy food residues at disposal

What are common use cases for these paper pouches?

Single-use products or other use cases that don’t require a zipper (stickers and tin ties can be used). It is great for products with low to mid-barrier requirements. Examples include non-food items, chocolate, coffee, tea, granola, confectionaries, grains, spices, and some supplements.

This pouch is unsuitable for liquids, moist goods, heavy products over 2lbs, or when a zipper is required.

Does EcoEnclose offer custom styles, sizes, and branding?

Yes - We can quote your unique project starting at volumes of 20,000 units for paper and plastic pouches. We can convert the paper material into three-sided sachets, stand-up bottom pouches, or quad-seal pouches. Digital and flexographic printing options are available depending on your design requirements. Contact us for more details.

Are these paper pouches recyclable?

Yes - our paper pouches meets the EU’s TAPPI T275 recyclability test method.

How are these paper pouches sealed?

Our paper pouch solutions are closed by heal seal. As these are paper-based coated solutions, heat sealing may require more precision than you have experienced with other pouch films. We have worked with various brands to dial in sealing instructions for this new innovative material. Read our EarthFilm Paper Pouch Sealing Guide for optimal sealers and sealing instructions.

Can these paper pouches be manufactured with a resealable zipper?

No - We cannot include a zipper on this paper pouch material. You can adhere a tin tie, provide a sticker, or ask customers to use a clip or rubber band to reseal the pouch.

Can these paper pouches be manufactured with degassing valves?

No - We cannot include a degassing valve; however, unlike a plastic pouch that requires a degassing valve, our paper pouch is designed to self-vent. Our standard paper film's oxygen barrier rating (OTR) is <1 cc m² day, measured at 23°c and 50% rh. trials by coffee customers have confirmed this provides the necessary shelf-life without need for a valve.< div>

Where are these paper pouches manufactured?

Our paper pouches are coated, printed, and converted in the UK with paper sourced from a paper mill in China. We are working towards domestic manufacturing for the longer-term.

How does the cost compare to other pouch solutions?

Because of the vast array of pouch options available worldwide, it is challenging to offer a singular cost comparison. However, it is essential to note that this solution is not intended to be a low-cost option. This paper pouch will likely be significantly more expensive than the low-cost, multi-layered, virgin plastic options manufactured in Asia.

The most successful projects we have completed with this material are ones where a brand can share their target per unit price range upfront to understand if and how we can meet their budget quickly.

What is the cost of shipping to North America from the UK?

While the freight cost from the UK is variable, it costs around $1400 per pallet - cost decreases as the number of pallets increases. This equates to around $0.07 per unit for quantities around 20,000 and is a critical reason for our high MOQ of 20,000 units. Ocean freight takes about four weeks.

Air freight is also an option - taking 7 to 10 business days - but costs closer to $0.22 per unit.

Are these paper pouches FDA-Compliant?

Yes - our paper pouches are FDA-Compliant, meaning the product is compliant with FDA rules and regulations and is created with materials that are FDA-Approved. We recommend ordering case quantities if you plan to use these for direct food contact because our bundles are re-cased in a non-FDA compliant facility.
